JAÉN / 5 November 2026

To mark the European Heritage Days 2026 in the province of Jaén, held this year under the theme Heritage at Risk: revive, resist, reimagine, architect and researcher Santiago Quesada will deliver the lecture “The Islamic Tower System of the Sierra de Segura (12th Century)”. The session will delve into the architectural, landscape, and territorial significance of this network of al-Andalus settlements, offering a comprehensive reading of their role as multifunctional elements during the medieval period.

The presentation will examine not only the typological characteristics and construction techniques specific to these 12th-century fortifications, but also the physical vulnerability currently affecting several sites due to neglect and the passage of time. Aligned with the guidelines of this year’s edition, the event will encourage critical reflection on the conservation, restoration, and safeguarding criteria required to halt their deterioration, as well as the essential role scientific research plays in enhancing historical heritage vital to understanding the province of Jaén.

The event will take place on 5 November at 19:00 at the Museo Provincial de Jaén. Organised by the regional ministry for culture, historic heritage, and sports of the Junta de Andalucía, admission is free until capacity is reached, and the session is open to researchers, students, and anyone interested in the region’s defensive heritage.
