Cultural Perceptions Towards Women in Entrepreneurial Teams: The Effect on Team Processes and Outcomes
Santos, S. C. & Neumeyer, X. (working paper).

Abstract
This study investigates the influence of gender composition in an entrepreneurial team on the team’s reflexivity and ability to obtain resources for their new venture. Further, we propose that the impact of gender composition on team reflexivity will depend on a country’s normative context, namely the national perception towards women entrepreneurship and its support. We test our hypotheses with data collected from 64 entrepreneurial teams, comprised of members from 20 different countries and integrate that dataset with the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. Results showed that the proportion of women in a team is positively related to the team’s ability to obtain resources through the mediating effect of team reflexivity. The effect of the proportion of women in a team on team reflexivity and, ultimately, on a team’s ability to obtain resources, is stronger when team members are from countries with a more favourable national perception on women’s entrepreneurship. These findings provide evidence for framing the quality of team processes as being contingent on the interaction between the proportion of women in a team and national culture towards female’s entrepreneurship and contribute to the literatures on women entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial teams and culture.
