Summary:

The phenomenon of entrepreneurship is attracting increasing attention from academics, policy makers and practitioners, as it is identified as a fundamental tool for the dynamism of economies, its growth, wealth generation and job creation. However, the specific knowledge about the process that takes people from the intention to create an enterprise (potential entrepreneur) to carrying out specific behaviors towards creation (nascent entrepreneur) and to the actual establishment of the company (new entrepreneur) is still scarce. There are many questions that remain unresolved, in particular with regard to the variables that influence those decisions and the effective implementation of those behaviors.

The research project ELITE “Longitudinal study on the process of emergence of high-impact entrepreneurs” provides a deep insight into the different stages of the entrepreneurial process, studying from the potential entrepreneur, the nascent entrepreneur, and the new entrepreneur. In particular, this study focuses on the group of entrepreneurs with the greatest potential to generate high impact firms in the economy (defined as those that respond to market opportunities by introducing wealth-generating innovations and growth). To do this, the group of entrepreneurs with high level of education (university degree) and an opportunity motivation will be analyzed.

More specifically, the overall objectives of the project are as follows:

O1. To identify the key factors influencing the movement from intention (potential entrepreneurs) to action (nascent entrepreneurs) in the group of opportunity-motivated university graduates.

O2. To identify the key factors that determine the success (or lack of it) in the movement from nascent to new entrepreneur in the group of opportunity-motivated university graduates.

To achieve these goals, two longitudinal studies will be carried out on two different samples of potential and nascent entrepreneurs. In the first case, a large sample of 3415 university graduates with high entrepreneurial intention and opportunity motivation will be studied. In the second case, a sample of nascent entrepreneurs in contact with entrepreneur-support centers will be studied. In particular, more than 1000 nascent entrepreneurs participating in the YUZZ programme will be accessed.

Both studies will allow the identifiation of the entrepreneur’s personal factors and the environmental variables that make the difference and cause certain entrepreneurs to continue forward in the entrepreneurial process while others stagnate or drop it.

The research team of this project consists mostly of members of the research group “SMEs and Economic Development” at the University of Seville (ref. SEJ-128 of the Andalusian Research Plan). In addition, the team has the participation of some prominent researchers from other institutions (Prof. Alain Fayolle -EMLYON Business School, Prof. Antonio Caetano -Institute Unviersitario of Lisbon, Prof. Maribel Guerrero -University of Deusto), with proven experience and knowledge about the phenomenon of entrepreneurship. In particular, Profs. Fayolle and Caetano are responsible for the GEM project in France and Portugal, respectively, and Prof. Guerrero is a member of GEM Spain team.
