- The paper "Demonstration of negative refraction of microwaves", (authored by Maria C. Velazquez-Ahumada, Manuel J. Freire, Jose M. Algarín, and Ricardo Marqués) has been selected as the cover of the April Issue of American Journal of Physics, Volume 79, Issue 4, pp. 349, April 2011..

- The Ph.D. student at University of Seville, José Miguel Algarín Guisado, has been
awarded the "Young Scientist Prize URSI 2010" during the Closing Ceremony of the XXVth
Simposium Nacional de la URSI. This prize corresponds to the paper entitled: "Lentes de
permeabilidad -1: Resolución y Aplicación en la Imagen por Resonancia Magnética en Paralelo" (in
Spanish) which was co-authored by Manuel Freire, Ricardo Marqués and Marcos López (Microwaves Group
of the University of Seville). The prize for young scientists (below 35 years old) is awarded on an
annual basis by the Scientific Committee of the Unión Científica Internacional de Radio (URSI). The
2010 issue of the national simposium organized by this society (the most important conference in the
field in Spain) was held during the month of September in Bilbao (Spain). The awarded paper was
chosen among a reduced number of finalists who presented their papers in a special session.

- Francisco Medina (Head of the Microwaves Group) has been awarded the N.A. Khizhnyak Award by the TPC of the 2010 Mathematical Methods in
Electromagnetic Theory Symposium (Kiev, Uhraine) "for his contributions to Electromagentic
theory".

- The 18th of June (anniversary of the foundation of Puerto Real town, Cádiz, Spain), 2010,
Francisco Medina received the honorific title of "Hijo Predilecto de la
Villa de Puerto Real" ("Favourite Son of Puerto Real").

- Ricardo Marqués Sillero leader of the Microwaves-Group-UNiversity of Seville partner in
the coordinated EMET Consolider project (CSD2008-00066), has been the Chair of the Technical
Programme Committee of the IV Metamaterials Conference.
The Fourth International Congress on Advanced Electromagnetic Materials in Microwaves and Optics, held during the month of September 2010 in Karlsruhe (Germany), organized by the European Network of Excellence Metamorphose, attracted more than 380 participants and 314 papers were presented during the four days of the conference, with authors coming from 44 countries. Spanish researchers contributed 29 papers, thus making our country the fourth (after USA, Germany and UK) in number of contributions.
- Francisco Medina Mena, Head of the Microwaves Group, has been elevated to the grade of IEEE Fellow (class 2010) "for contributions to the analysis and physical understanding of planar structures, anisotropic media, and metamaterials". Its nomination was sponsored by the Microwave Theory and Techniques Society of IEEE (See MTT Fellow Class 2010).

- 2008
- Researchers of the Microwaves Group of the University of Seville (Seville, Spain), under supervision of Profs. Ricardo Marqués and Manuel Freire, show how metamaterials can be used to improve the sensitivity of Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI). The finding has been highlighted by Physics World.
