With the aim of evaluating and publicizing the real situation experienced by these patients, the Health & Territory Research Group (HTR) of the University of Seville, in collaboration with the Spanish Migraine and Headache Association (Aemice), Novartis and a scientific committee of neurological experts in migraine, has produced the “Atlas de Migraña en España 2018”.
Unlike other studies, the “Atlas of Migraine” goes a step further by incorporating the perspective of patients and their families regarding their disease and all that it entails, gathered through a survey carried out by more than 1,200 people with migraine.
Migraine is not just a headache. It is a complex neurological disorder that affects more than 4 million people in Spain, with a prevalence of 12% of which 80% are women between 20 and 40 years old.
The diagnostic delay for episodic migraines is 6.4 years on average and 7.3 years for chronic migraines, which are characterised by migraine headaches occurring 15 days or more per month1.
Only 25% of respondents had been diagnosed in less than two years2.
24% of people with chronic migraine were on sick leave in the last twelve months3.
Regarding family and social impact: 85% of patients miss social events, 70% miss family events and 68.4% consider that their illness affects the life of their spouse or family4.
