FARMOLAP is a research group at the Department of Pharmacology, a Faculty of Pharmacy, at the University of Sevilla. The group is comprised of professors and doctors, including postdoctoral researchers and students-in-training. Our research focuses on the knowledge about inflammation as a prominent component in different processes and illnesses, in acute and also chronic phases, with the inclusion of the immune system and the relationships with changes in tissues that lead to the loss of balance necessary for its good performance. FARMOLAP has extensive experience in intestinal pathology including Inflammatory Bowel Disease and colon cancer, for which the group has developed protocols and biological models that allow for its study. The group is also interested in chronic inflammation and the molecular changes that promote cellular aging. Another aspect of our focus which is in full development involves skin studies, advancement in various inflammatory-based diseases, as well as the development of epidermal cancerous processes; Similar to the intestinal epithelium, similar result frequently appear on the skin, with comparable roles, but in different scenarios. FARMOLAP has developed different methodological procedures in cell and animal models in our laboratories at the Faculty of Pharmacy, with the support of the Research and Technology Center of the University of Sevilla (CITIUS, https://citius.us.es/web/), which has state-of-the-art scientific-technical equipment and trained personnel for its optimal use. Our challenge is the search for drugs, nutraceuticals, or functional food ingredients that help prevent and/or cure important inflammatory-based pathologies. From this perspective, most of our research currently focuses on products of natural origin and semi-synthetic derivatives.
