ABSTRACT:

The European energy efficiency directive allows heritage buildings to be retrofitted to less demanding energy-standards than those required for the rest. In dwellings of listed residential buildings, such exclusion entails environmental, socio-economic and health risks that are worth investigating further. The aim of this work is to assess the air quality and thermal comfort of eight occupied dwellings in the conservation areas of Seville, Cordoba and Granada. To this end, the main environmental variables were monitored, studying residents’ behaviour in relation to energy, both in summer and winter. The results showed that their particular characteristics, in combination with natural ventilation, are not enough to avoid the serious deficiencies detected, which climate change will make even worse. The pressing need for further research on the topic, including the generation of specific indicators adapted to the heritage protection rules, became apparent.
