ABSTRACT:

Among the different types of church architecture, cathedrals stand out for their lavish and majestic spaces. Accordingly, spaces originally designed solely for the liturgy are now chosen for the celebration of different events. Some types of ceremony demanded a spatial adaptation of cathedrals through the incorporation of ephemeral, decorative and visual architecture in keeping with their major heritage value. This also involved a modification of acoustic behaviours, affecting the perception of music and speech. The cathedral of Seville is no exception and became an important venue for numerous festive or commemorative events. These unique historical ceremonies were characteristically events which transformed the interior space of the cathedral, either through the incorporation of a large structure or that of drapes, tapestries, and additional furniture. This paper reconstructs the sound space resulting from a series of spatial transformations which took place around the main chancel, the choir, and the transept between both spaces, when celebrating major feast days. This analysis is carried out through an acoustic simulation of the cathedral, previously calibrated with in situ measurements, incorporating the spatial alterations and decorations characteristic of such ceremonies and established using documentary and iconographic sources. This has allowed us to ascertain the influence of ephemeral architecture on the acoustic parameters typically found in cathedrals. In addition, thanks to modern acoustic simulation tools, auralizations were obtained reproducing the musical acoustic environments of these age-old interventions. This knowledge and the reconstruction of the sound space of the cathedral contributes to an increased recognition of its heritage value, intangible in this specific case.
