The TEP107: Structures and Geotechnics research group was established in 1988 by University Professor José Luis de Justo Alpañés, as part of the first wave of research groups created by the Regional Government of Andalusia. Its aim was to bring together the scientific and technical research carried out at the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Seville (ETS de Arquitectura de Sevilla), in the fields of Soil Engineering and Continuum Mechanics and Theory of Structures.
Prior to its official formation, the group was already active and had secured seven research projects from CAICYT and other institutions since 1976. These projects focused on the following research areas: Earthquake Engineering, partially saturated soils, earthfill and mine waste dams, reinforced concrete retaining walls, and the Seville Metro.
Since 1988, the group has secured 27 research projects and contracts funded by the Regional Government of Andalusia, the European Community, and other bodies. These have covered the original lines of research, with additional studies on landslides, subsidence, construction on soft ground, building construction, and the restoration of historic monuments.
Around the year 2011, upon his retirement, Professor de Justo Alpañés had to hand over the leadership of the research group to Percy Durand Neyra.
