This project is focused on the development of a seismic risk simulator for Spanish residential buildings. The simulator will enhance the security of society through seismic risk prevention and planning. A real-time evaluating tool, based on the seismic risk simulator, will also be developed. It will quickly classify residential buildings according to the most probable damage and number of human casualties (dead and wounded) produced by an earthquake, considering the effects of non-structural elements and the soil structure interaction. The information of both tools will be collected in a Geographical Information System (GIS). This will allow the Civil Protection and the emergency corps to work more efficiently after an earthquake, improving the resilience of the population and reducing human and economic losses. A system to automatically inform the National Geographical Institute of Spain (NGIS) after a significant earthquake will be implemented. It will provide information about the estimated building stock´s damage in the area affected by the earthquake. These tools will be tested in Seville, Granada, Almeria and Murcia, as representative cities of the seismic risk in Spain.
This is commonly done following a macroseismic approach. In this project, it is proposed to create a mechanical model for every building, which is a more accurate method. Artificial Neural Networks will be employed, in order to automatise the calculation. Each building’s structural type will be estimated based on the census track (year of construction and volume).
Finally, some dissemination activities are proposed: publication in indexed journals and congresses; publication of a webpage with the tools and the information related to the project; presenting the tools to the Civil Protection authorities and scientific community; development of formative workshops for architects and engineers.
