11th Tensions of Europe Conference, 19 to 21 September 2024

Our PhD candidate Pablo Lima will be giving a talk at the Tensions of Europe in Frankfurt (Oder) on some of the advancements achieved over his first year of research:

Radioactive waste disposal and other sources of marine pollution peaked during the Cold War nuclear fever, filling the seas with exogeneous geochemical compounds. Paradoxically, oceanographers creatively came up with ways of using the radioactive properties of pollutants as proxies -or tracers- to date the age of water masses and estimate the duration of the large-scale currents (of the order of 1000 years!). By blending the expertise of chemical and physical oceanography, tracer oceanography emerged as an elegant and powerful sub-field that led to striking discoveries of unexpected global consequences in the Mediterranean Sea by the turn of the 20th century.
