ABSTRACT:

This chapter contains information about the main issues in the estimation of construction waste (CW), for the purpose of promoting waste recovery within the framework of sustainable construction. Several studies and quantisation tables estimating construction and demolition (C&D) waste, both regionally and on a smaller scale and in different types of buildings, are given. The difficulties and importance of obtaining a greater knowledge of CW from the initial conception of the project are discussed. Seventeen examples and case studies highlight the factors affecting the estimation of C&D waste, the improvement achieved in the management scenarios and the benefits of implementation in attaining sustainable buildings.
