ABSTRACT:

The Historic Centre of Oporto, inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1996, is nowadays still threatened by degradation of its urban built heritage, partly due to the departure of the resident population. Traditional building materials and techniques should be preserved when selecting rehabilitation strategies that must face a complexity of contemporary demands: thermal performance, technical systems, maintenance, ecological and recyclable materials, waste management and others. This paper establishes an operative  methodology aiming the election of energy-efficient strategies for the buildings of the Historic Centre of Oporto, based on the defined criteria and according to both morphological and patrimonial values of each building. Regarding the results obtained with this study when simulating and improvement of the windows infiltration rate, we can conclude of the significant increase of the energy efficiency in the heating demands of these buildings, distinguising this as one of the primary measures to improvein the rehabilitation strategies of the Historic Centres.
