The Microwaves Group (Grupo de Microondas in Spanish) of the University of Seville (GMUS) is one of the research groups indexed under the chapter "Information and Communication Technologies" (Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones - TIC -)) within the Spanish "Andalusian Research Plan" (Plan Andaluz de Investigación, PAI ). The code of the group is TIC-112.
The GMUS was founded at the beginning of the eighties by Prof. Manuel Horno Montijano . He was the principal researcher of the group until his premature decease in September, 1998. Since that date, the leader of the group is Francisco Medina Mena, "Profesor Titular" (Associate Professor) at the Department of Electronics and Electromagnetism, Physics Faculty, University of Seville (Seville, Spain). Independent research lines are also conducted by Profs. Ricardo Marqués Sillero, Rafael Rodríguez Boix, Francisco Mesa Ledesma and Jesús Martel Villagrán.
Although the main facilities of the research group are in the Department of Electronics and Electromagnetism, several members of the Microwaves Group are with the Departments of Applied Physics I, II and III of the University of Seville. Eleven Associate Professors, one Doctor of Sciences (Post. Doc) and six Ph.D. students are presently members of this research group.
Since its foundation, the group has been working on topics related with applications of Electromagnetic theory to problems arising in the context of microwave circuits and antennas (analysis and design). In particular, planar transmission lines, circuits and antennas have been the main object of study for many years. The group has made a good number of contributions to the analysis and applications of such kind of structures. More recently, several members of the group have developed a new research line in the field of electromagnetic "metamaterials" (with the leadership of Prof. Ricardo Marqués) and other members have started a research line on electromagnetic compatibility (Prof. Joaquín Bernal and Francisco Mesa). Prof. Rafael R. Boix has started a research line on reflectarrays and modeling of periodic structures. Extraordinary transmission phenomena and their applications are also object of attention.
The members of the group are the authors of 9 patents of invention (7 Spanish National patents and 2 PCT patents), 10 book chapters and more than 240 journal papers, most of them in journals of high impact within their respective fields (see publications list). In particular, the group has been very active in the field of microwave theory and techniques, being one of the European research groups with the highest number of papers published in "IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques", the journal of reference in this research area (source: ISI Web of Knowledge). They have also contributed to about 400 conference papers / abstracts (more than 270 of them in international conferences). Most of the members of the group act as reviewers for leading journals (Science, Advanced Materials, several IEEE, IEE, APS and IOP periodicals among others up to a whole of more than 40 titles). Some of them act as organizers, members of TPC or reviewers for leading conferences in their field (TPC of International Microwave Symposium, European Microwave Conference and Metamaterials Conference among others). The leader of the group is also in the Editorial Board of "International Journal of RF and Microwave Computer-Aided Engineering". Three of the members of the group are listed as "Highly Cited Scientists" in "Essential Science Indicators" (Thomsom ISI Web of Knowledge). In brief, it is possible to say that the group is presently well established at the international level.
