The study examines the evolution of self-perceived employability across emerging adulthood, following university students at three time points between 2015 and 2024. Self-perceived employability is understood as individuals’ subjective assessment of their abilities and opportunities to access and remain in the labor market, an especially relevant construct in a context marked by uncertainty and youth labor precarity.

The results indicate that employability perceptions remain relatively stable over time, even when mean scores show a slight increase after controlling for age and gender. Likewise, individuals who begin the study feeling employable tend to maintain that perception over time.

Consistent gender differences were observed, with men reporting higher levels of self-perceived employability, particularly in the external dimension. Moreover, family support emerges as a significant factor in shaping these perceptions at various points in the study, underscoring the importance of this microsystem in the transition to adulthood.

These findings have important practical implications for supporting young people as they navigate the transition to adult life. The stability of the construct suggests that interventions should focus on reducing gender inequalities and strengthening support networks that act as protective factors in the development of self-perceived employability.

With this contribution, the team continues to advance research on youth and employability, providing scientific evidence on the processes that accompany the transition to adulthood.

Sánchez-Queija, I., Vargas, R., Rodríguez-Pérez, M., Macía Guerrero, P., Smith, K., & Parra, A.
