We are interested in the theoretical study of memory, as well as the evolution of this field and how representations of the past have been used throughout history and across different geographical contexts for identity construction and the justification of “present-day” policies. Historically, these representations have been disseminated through highly diverse media and cultural channels. Museums, textbooks, cinema, and the press—as well as the urban landscape and social media—have been used to communicate a specific image of our shared past. Therefore, the relationship between memory policies and the “communication of the past” is at the core of MEYCOM’s research.

The construction of nation-states and European empires during the 19th century relied heavily on the political use of a specific—often mythologized, militaristic, and messianic—past, which strongly influenced the authoritarian projects of the 20th and 21st centuries. At the same time, an anti-authoritarian memory emerged, drawing from democratic political projects, self-management, and the defense of individual and collective rights. Both traditions remain alive in contemporary Europe and are subjects of study at MEYCOM, particularly regarding the former Soviet space and the propagandistic and media uses of the past in today’s Russia.

In Spain, the term “historical memory” usually refers to our present-day representation of a specific period in our 20th-century history: the Civil War and Francoism. Although timelines vary, there is a general consensus that the study of Francoist repression and the recovery of the memory of its victims must be at the center of research. As MEYCOM researchers, we are interested in the reasons behind the polarization of narratives about the recent past, media coverage of memory-related issues, and the role of education and mass media in shaping how we look at the past. Since MEYCOM originated in Andalusia, we place the geographical focus of much of our research there, centering on the lines detailed below.

Writer Yolanda Arroyo Pizarro once said that “remembering is a rebellion.” Today, it is equally rebellious to foster the conditions and narratives that allow us to transform the present and imagine alternative, desirable, socio-sustainable, and just futures. From a critical and interdisciplinary approach that integrates cultural analysis, media criticism, and eco-/trans-feminist epistemological reflection, MEYCOM does not only investigate subaltern memories and current crises; we also understand communication as a space for struggle and resistance, and a political tool with the potential for social transformation. Situated within feminist studies of communication and culture, we explore both the popularization of reactionary and continuationist narratives—which dictate the hegemonic possibilities of the past, present, and future—and the production of counter-narratives in feminist journalism, popular culture, and eco-social activism that propose paths toward well-being with life at the center.
