Joyce’s distinctive prose is inextricably connected to our conception of the modernists, from Virginia Woolf to Gertrude Stein, and its literary heritage and impact can be found all around the world from the early 20th century onwards.

Following the theoretical concerns of the Research Project “Reorienting Assemblage Theory in Anglophone Literature and Culture (RELY)” (PID2022-137881NB-I00), this seminar seeks to examine the impact that Joyce’s work had and continues to have on other literary texts through the lenses of “assemblage theory”, as part of the network turn, developed by Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari, Bill Brown, Manuel DeLanda, among others. According to the main tenets of assemblage theory, society and culture are, in fact, “assembled” mechanisms, composed by a myriad of different elements that function as gears that preserve these same mechanisms. However, Deleuze and Parnet point out that the most important aspect of these assemblages is not the final product but, rather, the diverse relationships that are formed between each of the elements that conform them (Deleuze and Parnet viii). Consequently, assemblage theory does not seek to define a reality, but to elucidate how, when, where and why these relationships are created, and how they affect the final effect of an assembled reality (Nail 24). Furthermore, in literary terms this theory has been defined by Brown as a radical new way of rethinking narrative texts, as he states that the novel is an entanglement of voices and materials that are intrinsically linked to earlier and contemporary textual and artistic forms (271-4).

Taking this into consideration, we invite those interested in participating in the seminar to submit a proposal considering the diverse ways in which Joyce’s literary influence can be regarded as a key element in the creation of an assemblage. We encourage explorations based on the relationship(s) between Joyce’s work and modernism, as well as his stylistic and thematic heritage in contemporary literature. Suggested topics include (but are not restricted to) the following:

– Joyce’s impact on Irish and Anglophone culture(s) as seen through the lenses of assemblage theory.

– Joyce’s work as one of the entangled elements within modernism that sought to articulate problematic new issues within the early 20th century.

– Joyce’s life and work as related to the lives and works of other modernists, and the ways in which this connection shows a specific kind of social and literary assemblage.

– Joyce’s influence in late 20th century and 21st century literatures, focusing on how this heritage can be seen as an assembled element in contemporary fiction.

– The relationship between Joyce’s oeuvre and other relevant cultural and literary events such as the formulation of new systems and discourses related to race, gender, corporalities, sexuality, masculinity, or feminism.

We welcome papers, both in English or Spanish, tackling the aforementioned or other similar Joycean topics as regarded through the perspective of assemblage theory, including also Irish and Modernist studies in general.
