Our Healthy Architecture & City<\/b><\/a> research group from the University of Seville has been awarded one of the 2026 Best Practice Awards<\/b> at the TecnoSocial<\/b> <\/a>scientific forum, held in M\u00e1laga. The recognition highlights the value of the innovative prototype of a smart mirror with selective reflection<\/b>, designed specifically to improve the lives of people with Alzheimer’s disease.<\/p>\n

The winning proposal, under the title \u201cArchitectural design with technologies adapted to cognitive impairment: smart mirror prototype\u201d<\/b>, was developed by researchers Santiago Quesada-Garc\u00eda<\/b>,<\/a> Pablo Valero-Flores<\/b><\/a>, and Mar\u00eda Lozano-G\u00f3mez<\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The home as a safe \u2018prosthetic environment<\/h4>\n

The major innovation of this device lies in its holistic, preventative approach.<\/span> A frequent symptom in the advanced stages of Alzheimer\u2019s is visual agnosia: individuals experiencing this cognitive decline fail to recognise their own reflection, frequently triggering severe episodes of panic, distress, and disorientation.<\/p>\n

To prevent this, the smart mirror features a facial recognition sensor linked to a mirror fitted<\/strong> with advanced smart film technology. The moment it detects the presence of the person living with the condition, the glass automatically turns opaque<\/strong>, allowing the mirror to go unnoticed by them. Through this type of smart object, the home is transformed into what researchers term a \u2018prosthetic environment\u2019\u2014one capable of interacting with occupants and compensating for specific impairments and needs.<\/p>\n

A twofold benefit:<\/b> This solution not only safeguards the user\u2019s emotional stability while promoting their independence, but also substantially eases the caregiving burden, stress, and anxiety experienced by both family and professional carers.<\/p>\n

Real-world validation and institutional backing<\/h4>\n

The prototype has already been successfully validated in real-world settings through the VIVAlz project (US.<\/strong><\/a>24-17)<\/strong>,<\/span> an initiative funded by the Regional Ministry of Development, Territorial Articulation, and Housing<\/strong> of the Regional Government of Andalusia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The setting for this accolade, TecnoSocial 2026<\/strong><\/a> (organised by the University of M\u00e1laga<\/strong> in partnership with the Regional Government of Andalusia<\/strong>, the M\u00e1laga Provincial Council<\/strong>, and M\u00e1laga City Council<\/strong>), is thus confirmed as the epicentre of the shift towards a new social welfare model driven by digital innovation.<\/p>\n
