Abstract: Dark breathers consist of the opposite type of localization than the usual breathers (bright breathers). That is, most of the particles ofa discrete system are oscillating with large amplitude while a few or only one have very small amplitude. The conditions of the theorems that garantee the stability of bright breathers are not fulfilled for the dark ones. However, there is a number of situations where they are stable, which is fully understable in the framework of Aubry's band theory. This opens the possibility of observing them in real systems, like DNA.
