Abstract:

Recent investigations of highly nonlinearsolitary waves in one-dimensional granular crystals using numerical computations, analytical theory, and experiments. The speaker will provide an introduction to this physical system and then focus in particular on thedynamics of intrinsic localized modes (aka, discrete breathers) incrystals with defects and in diatomic crystals.
