{"id":2034,"date":"2019-06-05T07:00:31","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T07:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grupo.us.es\/estygeotec\/?p=2034"},"modified":"2025-05-28T13:54:38","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T13:54:38","slug":"2019-huelvainformacion-estan-los-colegios-de-huelva-preparados-para-soportar-un-terremoto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/grupo.us.es\/estygeotec\/2019-huelvainformacion-estan-los-colegios-de-huelva-preparados-para-soportar-un-terremoto\/","title":{"rendered":"2019 &#8211; HuelvaInformaci\u00f3n &#8211; Are the schools in Huelva prepared for an earthquake?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"74\" data-end=\"217\"><strong data-start=\"74\" data-end=\"217\">The Universities of Seville and Algarve Analyze Risks in Schools in the Province, Especially the Coastal Area, Due to High Seismic Activity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"219\" data-end=\"845\">Huelva \u2014 <strong data-start=\"228\" data-end=\"318\">Are schools and educational centers prepared to respond in the event of an earthquake?<\/strong> This is the question addressed by research conducted by experts from the <strong data-start=\"392\" data-end=\"442\">Universities of Seville and Algarve (Portugal)<\/strong>, who have developed a system to <strong data-start=\"475\" data-end=\"529\">evaluate and reinforce schools against earthquakes<\/strong> using a set of indicators. Based on these, they seek solutions to make these buildings more resistant according to principles of <strong data-start=\"659\" data-end=\"705\">efficiency, cost, and architectural impact<\/strong>. Although the method is designed for schools, it can also be applied to other types of buildings such as homes, high schools, or hospitals.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"847\" data-end=\"1357\">Using specialized software, the experts analyzed building behavior according to seismic regulations, explains <a href=\"https:\/\/fundaciondescubre.es\/noticias\/desarrollan-un-metodo-para-aumentar-la-seguridad-de-los-colegios-ante-los-terremotos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Enlace\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/fundaciondescubre.es\/noticias\/desarrollan-un-metodo-para-aumentar-la-seguridad-de-los-colegios-ante-los-terremotos\/\"><strong>Fundaci\u00f3n Descubre<\/strong><\/a> in a press release. They obtain data to understand the <strong data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1083\">structural response and the potential damage<\/strong> the building would suffer during an earthquake. The method evaluates how the school&#8217;s performance could be improved with different structural reinforcement systems. This information is combined with <strong data-start=\"1283\" data-end=\"1327\">cost and architectural impact indicators<\/strong> to find the best alternative.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1359\" data-end=\"1705\">The study focused on schools built in <strong data-start=\"1397\" data-end=\"1423\">Huelva and the Algarve<\/strong>. &#8220;Most of these schools were built during the 1970s. Therefore, seismic requirements were not strict, and in most cases, the designs only considered gravitational loads,&#8221; explained lead author <strong data-start=\"1617\" data-end=\"1661\">Mar\u00eda Victoria Requena Garc\u00eda de la Cruz<\/strong>, a researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huelvainformacion.es\/tag\/universidad_de_sevilla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Enlace\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.huelvainformacion.es\/tag\/universidad_de_sevilla\">Universidad de Sevilla<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1707\" data-end=\"2039\">The method was successfully applied to a school in Huelva, with the results and various phases of the system developed by this group of experts published in the journal <em data-start=\"1876\" data-end=\"1886\">PLOS ONE<\/em> under the title <em data-start=\"1903\" data-end=\"2039\">\u201cAn index-based method for evaluating seismic retrofitting techniques. Application to a reinforced concrete primary school in Huelva.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2041\" data-end=\"2463\">&#8220;Many schools could benefit from structural reinforcement, so part of the work involved screening which construction solutions best fit our technology, are more cost-effective, and respect the building\u2019s design so it remains functional,&#8221; noted co-author <strong data-start=\"2295\" data-end=\"2314\">Antonio Morales<\/strong>, project lead at the University of Seville for the <strong data-start=\"2366\" data-end=\"2379\">PERSISTAH<\/strong> project funded by the <strong data-start=\"2402\" data-end=\"2429\">Interreg-POCTEP program<\/strong>, under which this research falls.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2465\" data-end=\"2847\">The regions of Huelva and the Algarve are characterized by <strong data-start=\"2524\" data-end=\"2560\">considerable earthquake activity<\/strong>, as with other parts of Andalusia identified on Spain\u2019s seismic hazard map, due to their proximity to the <strong data-start=\"2667\" data-end=\"2693\">Gibraltar-Azores fault<\/strong>, where the Eurasian and African tectonic plates meet. Exposure to earthquakes can be worsened depending on the <strong data-start=\"2805\" data-end=\"2818\">soil type<\/strong> where a building is located.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2849\" data-end=\"3025\">&#8220;In Huelva\u2019s case, being near the coast and marshlands, it is characterized by <strong data-start=\"2928\" data-end=\"2942\">soft soils<\/strong>, which amplify the effects of seismic activity,&#8221; Mar\u00eda Victoria Requena explained.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3027\" data-end=\"3260\">Additionally, primary schools in both regions share common seismic vulnerabilities. The oldest schools, dating from the 1960s, were built with <strong data-start=\"3170\" data-end=\"3192\">load-bearing walls<\/strong>, featuring a high percentage of openings and low-quality materials.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3262\" data-end=\"3547\">Others are constructed with <strong data-start=\"3290\" data-end=\"3350\">shorter-than-usual pillars and reinforced concrete beams<\/strong>.
