Presentation

The Territorial Structures and Systems Research Group (henceforth referred as GIEST) was founded in 1995 under the Andalusian Research Programme (HUM-396). It is composed of 50 members, among which are senior and junior researchers from different universities in Andalusia, freelance or attached to the Regional Government professionals, and PhD students who begin to define their future dedication.

The Group is aimed to exchange ideas, approaches and reflections on territorial regards, which gather into the following lines of research:

    • Territorial development as an expression of the environmental, economic and social balance.
    • Landscape as a complex reality mixing objects and perceptions.
    • Population and its spatial mobility: migrations and marginality.
    • Climate and its territorial and social footprint.
    • Water and regional planning: towards a new water culture.

The different results of the research are being collected in reports, academic papers and publications, which can be accessed via this website. Many of these results usually converge in the subsequent Territorial Development Reports of Andalusia, of which the first version was awarded the Andalusia Research Price 1999 by the Department of Economy and Treasury. In turn, the second and third versions –Observatory of Territorial Development of Andalusia (henceforth referred as ODTA) – are considered Excellence Research Projects by the Andalusian Research, Development and Innovation Scheme, Department of Innovation, Science and Enterprise of Andalusia.

GIEST has been uninterruptedly considered as a GROUP OF EXCELLENCE since the beginning of the EPI evaluations (1997), reaching the highest scores in both the scientific and transfer of knowledge indicators.
